In 2002 there were a total of 76 universities (53 State + 23 Vakif-Private) in Turkey. In 2020 this number reached 202 universities (129 State + 73 Vakif-Private) with 7,74 million students in total.
Both state and private universities in Turkey are full members of the Bologna Process since 2001, which standardizes degree programs across Europe. Many Turkish universities participate also in the Erasmus+ program, EU's programme which supports international student exchanges. Some of the universities have opportunities for scholarships as well.
Besides State and Private universities, there are also Professional and Vocational high schools giving BA degrees as well as special status and military or police higher education schools throughout the country.
