Apollonia was originally a Lycian city. The site today is located at Kilincli village on the road to Kekova, about 22 km (14 miles) to Kas, in western Antalya.
Apollonia was most probably built around 4th century BC. The meaning of the word is "the land of Apollo". In the 1st century AD they became a member of Tetrapolis, forming a union of 4 cities along with nearby Lycian cities of Simena, Aperlai and Isinda. It's known that Apollonia minted their own coins in the Lycian League, but other than this we don't have much knowledge about the history of this city.
The ruins which can be seen at the site today are mostly in the Acropolis; a church, bath, theater, necropolis, and the walls. The fortress inside the acropolis is from the Byzantine period.
This site of Apollonia in Lycia should not be confused with Apollonia ad Rhyndacum, today's name Gölyazi, which is located near Bursa province in Marmara region.
